Each volunteer must take the following steps to become a Certified Referee:
1) Annually (fall) register as an AYSO / Referee Volunteer at: https://www.newportayso.com/default.aspx?portalid=14903
Log in at top right and create a separate account for EACH volunteer so the system can track their training.
IMPORTANT: Each volunteer must have a unique email address!
[For example, if your child wishes to volunteer as a Referee, please create a separate account for them.]
Sterling Volunteers will send you a separate email - keep an eye out for it and follow the instructions therein.
Each Referee Volunteer must ALSO take the following steps:
2) Complete AYSO Volunteer online training:
(a) Login to your account at http://www.newportayso.com/
(b) Click "Volunteer" near top left of screen
(c) Click "AYSOU" at right - this will take you to the new system, eTrainU
(d) Click "Training Library" at left
(e) Click View Courses under "Safe Haven" and enroll in / complete the following four
mandatory AYSO Volunteer courses, totaling approximately 15-35 minutes each:
(i) AYSO's Safe Haven (one time only)
(ii) CDC Concussion Awareness - Online (one time only)
(iii) Sudden Cardiac Arrest - Online (one time only)
(iv) Access your Safe Sport Course Here (minors optional, short annual updates)
Sign up / login at this page and click "Catalog" then at bottom left select
"SafeSport Trained - U.S. Soccer Federation"
(f) LiveScan Fingerprinting for AYSO (not needed for minors, we will provide you with a code at no expense - one time only)
3) Complete Regional Referee Volunteer training:
(a) Access eTrainU as above and click View Courses under "Refereeing" and complete:
(i) AYSO's Summary of the Laws of the Game - Online (one time only)
(ii) "Regional Referee - Online + In-Person Companion Course (2 Part Bundle)" (Part 1 of 2, one time only)
IMPORTANT: DO NOT TAKE THE 8U COURSE - WE CANNOT PASS YOU AS A REGIONAL REFEREE WITH THE 8U COURSE.
THE 8U COURSE IS A BADGE UNTO ITSELF, AND YOU MAY ONLY DO 8U GAMES WITH THAT COURSE.
IMPORTANT: Do not select "Regional Referee - Full In-Person Course" without contacting your RRA first.
This is a full day (or 8 hour course) which you may do if you wish - this will negate the need to do steps 3.a.i and 3.a.ii - your choice.
IMPORTANT: Please DO NOT proceed to Step 4 if YOU HAVE NOT COMPLETED THE ONLINE PORTION in Step 3.
4) There is an In-Person Companion Course that is done separately AFTER you’ve done all of Step #3’s courses.
(Part 2 of 2, one time only)
(a) Access eTrainU as above and click "Training Event" at middle left.
(b) Under "Location" at the top of the page, select a radius (10/25 km) and then click the black dot with crosshairs.
(c) Select a "Regional Referee In-Person Companion" class that works for you and click "Register". Attend the class!
[Best to take printouts or screenshots of your online certificates, just in case.]
~Please note that the online calendar is not very intuitive, so if you are having a hard time finding what you need, please contact your RRA.
5) After completing Steps 1-4, email our Regional Referee Administrator [email protected] (RRA) directly so he may:
(a) Gather any other pertinent data.
(b) Order your referee equipment.
(c) Create a MatchTrak account for you, so you can reserve games online.
If this sounds confusing, rest assured that we are here to help! Reach out to your division director, your coach, or the RRA for assistance!
